Beats Music Creates Documentary On Spike Lee’s ‘Do the Right Thing’ [iOS Blog]

Beats Music, now owned by Apple, has created a documentary to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Do The Right Thing, a Brooklyn-based film created by Spike Lee. The 22-minute short features Spike Lee and Danny Aiello revisiting some of the original spots where the movie was shot, contrasted by shots from the film itself.

It also delves into some behind the scenes information on the building of the set and the creation of the movie, revisiting many of the actors who starred in the film and getting details on the making of the movie from the original crew.

Towards the end, the documentary features a huge block party thrown by Beats Music in the Brooklyn neighborhood where Do The Right Thing was filmed, with celebrity attendees like Erykah Badu, Dave Chapelle, Wesley Snipes, and Mos Def. The family-friendly event featured a performance of „Fight the Power“ by Public Enemy along with activities for kids and adults alike.

As noted by Variety, Beats Music’s new documentary suggests the company remains dedicated to expanding the Beats Music brand even after its purchase by Apple. According to rumors, one of the many potential reasons Apple purchased Beats was to up its „coolness“ factor among younger consumers, a position Beats has earned with both edgy advertising campaigns like the Do the Right Thing documentary and celebrity endorsements.

Samsung’s Goals for 2012: ‘Beating Apple is #1 Priority’

Internal documents included in the second patent trial between Samsung and Apple last week revealed how Apple viewed Android, calling for a „Holy War“ against Google and expressing concern about competition from larger-screened, lower-priced Android phones. A new set of documents reported by Re/code and AppleInsider reverses this perspective, showing how Samsung was laser-focused on Apple with the objective of beating the Cupertino company as its „#1 priority“ in 2012.

The internal document outlines the lessons Samsung learned in 2011 as it continued development on its Galaxy line of phones and faced a patent infringement lawsuit from Apple. Samsung considered the threat from Apple to be „extremely real and urgent“ and communicated to employees that „everything must be [in the] context of beating Apple“ in 2012.

Samsung listed the expected features of the upcoming iPhone 5 and predicted how Apple’s iPhone would perform in the marketplace. The Korean company also detailed how it would boost its own Galaxy branding and work with both carriers and retailers to expand its retail presence to combat growing consumer interest in the iPhone.

Samsung also detailed a strategy of „continuous“ branding campaigns where „Galaxy Nexus rolls into Galaxy Note into GSIII,“ playing upon Apple’s consistent branding of iPhone across generations of its products.

„Drive consumer pull,“ Samsung’s Galaxy branding document strategized, hoping that „customers walk into stores asking for Samsung.“ To get there, Samsung said it needed to „understand why customers buy Apple,“ and then „develop countermeasures by carrier/retail.“

The documents reveal that Samsung shifted its product lineup to serve carriers with 80% of the company’s product roadmap supporting carrier demands for joint projects, exclusive offers and low-cost handsets for entry-level consumers. Only 20% of its product lineup focused on high-end handsets like the Galaxy S3 and the Note II.

Samsung also spent billions on advertising to support its Galaxy phones with Apple-targeted ads that focused on iPhone line-waiters, Apple’s Genius Bar and more. Samsung credits the company’s 2012 „Next Big Thing“ advertisements as „a tipping point“ for the company’s branding and claimed in its opening arguments last week that Apple was taken aback by the edgy marketing campaign.

Sketchy iPhone 6 Dummy Unit Surfaces in New Photos [iOS Blog]

Photos of a new „dummy unit“ of Apple’s alleged iPhone 6 have surfaced on the site of case manufacturer Bling My Thing (via 9to5Mac community post). The photos show a black device that could be used as part of a mold to create cases based on that body design.

There are several issues with the case shown in the photos, however, including a round hole for the LED flash on the rear camera instead of the oval hole introduced on the iPhone 5s to accommodate the new True Tone dual-LED flash. Given the improved flash performance possible with dual LEDs, Apple will presumably continue to use dual-LED flash in future iPhones.

The photos also appear to show a slight change to the design of the earpiece area of the iPhone, with the proximity sensor window moving from next to the earpiece to next to the front camera. The ambient light sensor (not easily visible) is currently in this location. The dummy unit also shows the earpiece/camera/sensor features moved higher on the device’s front, to the point where the front camera unreasonably appears to sit at the very top edge of the device.

The dummy unit depicted in the photos carries a screen size of approximately 4.7 inches if relative sizing compared to the iPhone 5s shown next to the model is accurate. That size is in line with circulating rumors, with the company also rumored to looking at even larger version with a display in the range of 5.5-5.7 inches.

The blog post also includes a list of features for the iPhone 6, although it appears to simply be a recitation of circulating rumors rather than specific claims.
