Kate Winslet & Aaron Sorkin Win for ‘Steve Jobs’ at Golden Globes

Danny Boyle’s Steve Jobs film racked up two wins at last night’s 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards, getting half of the awards for which it was nominated. In total, Aaron Sorkin won for Best Screenplay and Kate Winslet won for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role.

Notably, Michael Fassbender lost to Leonardo DiCaprio’s win in the Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama category for The Revenant. Steve Jobs‘ composer, Daniel Pemberton, was also edged out by Ennio Morricone’s composition for The Hateful Eight in the Best Original Score section.

The new Steve Jobs film has been remembered more for its poor box office performance in the months since its wide release than for the quality of the film, and Aaron Sorkin briefly remarked on the topic while backstage at the Golden Globes. Sorkin commented on his enthusiasm for winning the award after the film had come to be known as „Box Office Failure Steve Jobs,“ hoping last night’s double wins will bolster the movie’s legacy in the face of its financial failures.

„The first weekend, we broke box office records. Same for the second weekend. The third weekend, the title of the movie changed to ‘Box Office Failure Steve Jobs’ … It took some of the air out – the pride we had been feeling. We understood it wasn’t for everybody, but we worked so hard on it. It was an unexpected and unusual movie. We just didn’t want that to be the epitaph for the movie. So this is very nice.“

Now that the Golden Globes out of the way, most are looking towards the 88th Academy Awards as the next major awards ceremony of the year, with nominations taking place this coming Thursday, January 14. Steve Jobs was rumored for Oscar nominations since the film debuted at Telluride in September, so it’s likely to get some some of the similar recognition it got this year at the Golden Globes: Michael Fassbender for Best Actor, Kate Winslet for Best Supporting Actress, and Aaron Sorkin for Best Adapted Screenplay.

iPhone 6 Case Maker’s Model Points to Larger Display, Ultra Thin Body

iPhone 6 rumors have thus far pointed towards a device that includes a larger screen and a thinner chassis than the existing iPhone 5s. Supporting those rumors, French site Nowhereelse.fr [Google Translation] has shared a case maker’s iPhone 6 model from Chinese case manufacturer Elam, which shows an ultra thin form factor very similar to that found in recent schematics.

The iPhone case model appears to have rounded corners and a single unified volume switch, which is different from the separate volume buttons in the iPhone 5s. It’s also a slight deviation from earlier design drawings, which showed separate rectangular volume buttons, suggesting this model may come from a different source.

Though not depicted on the case model, separate rumors have pointed towards a relocated power button, either on the top left edge of the device or on the side of the device, to improve one-handed use on a larger device. Currently, the power button is located on the top right edge of the iPhone. Bezels are also not visible, but rumors have indicated they could be 10 to 20 percent thinner than the bezels of the iPhone 5s and the phone itself may be 6.5mm to 7mm thick.

Earlier this week, MacRumors published a set of renderings based on the schematics that share similarities with the case model, depicting what the finished iPhone 6 might look like.

Apple’s iPhone 6 is expected to come in two different sizes: 4.7 inches and 5.5 inches. Recent rumors have indicated the 4.7 inch version will be available to ship in in the third quarter of 2014, while the larger version may ship somewhat later due to production delays.

Reliable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has suggested the 4.7-inch iPhone will have a 1334×750 Retina display with 326 pixels per inch, while the 5.5-inch version will have a 1920×1080 screen with 401 pixels per inch.

Along with a larger screen, both versions of the iPhone 6 are expected to include an upgraded A8 processor, Touch ID, 1GB of RAM, and camera improvements in the form of optical image stabilization.

Apple’s 2014 Product Roadmap: New iWatch, iPhones, iPads, Apple TV, and MacBooks Coming

Apple is set to release a slew of new products during the third quarter of 2014 according to KGI securities analyst Ming Chi Kuo, who often provides reliable information on Apple’s product lineup.

In a 2014 product roadmap, Kuo suggests Apple will introduce its first new product of the year, a lower-cost iMac, during the second quarter. Soon after, during the third quarter, Kuo predicts Apple will introduce an upgraded iPad Air and iPad mini, followed by an iWatch in two separate sizes, and a 4.7-inch iPhone.

An upgraded Apple TV set-top box will come somewhat later, as will the rumored 12-inch ultra slim MacBook and upgraded Retina MacBook Pros. Later, in the fourth quarter, Apple will introduce the 5.5-inch iPhone, which is said to be delayed due to issues with in-cell display technology. Along with his roadmap, Kuo also gives specific information on each of Apple’s upcoming products.

iWatch: Kuo believes the iWatch will ship during the end of the third quarter, offering biometric functionality, integration with the iPhone, iPad, and Mac, and a „fashionable appearance.“ As has been previously suggested, he predicts the device will come in two sizes, with a 1.3-inch and 1.5-inch flexible AMOLED display. It will also include a sapphire cover lens, biometric recognition, an NFC chip, wireless charging, a 200 to 250 mAh battery, and a slim and light design. Kuo also believes that Apple will offer the iWatch at multiple price points, with the most expensive version costing upwards of $1,000.

iPhone 6: Supporting previous iPhone 6 rumors, Kuo believes the device will come in two sizes: 4.7 and 5.5-inches, with resolutions of 1334×750 (326ppi) and 1920 x 1080 (401 ppi), respectively. Both models will come with an A8 processor, 1GB of RAM, LTPS display panels, optical image stabilization, and Touch ID. Kuo points to a 10 to 20 percent narrower bezel, a 6.5–7.0mm thickness, metal casings, and NFC integration. Mass shipments of the 4.7-inch version are expected in September, with the 5.5-inch version shipping later. Kuo suggests that only the 64GB 5.5-inch version will use sapphire displays.

iPad Air 2: The second-generation iPad Air is expected to adopt Touch ID, an A8 processor, and an improved camera with a resolution of eight megapixels. Kuo believes the second iPad Air could come earlier in the year than the previous iPad Air, which was released in October.

iPad mini with Retina Display: Like the iPad Air, a new Retina mini could gain an A8 processor and Touch ID, but Kuo believes it will retain the same form factor. He also suggests that the older iPad mini with Retina display could be sold at a lower cost.

12.9-inch iPad Pro: Kuo believes that Apple is indeed working on a 12.9-inch iPad, but he does not expect it to be launched in 2014.

12-inch MacBook Air: As rumored, Apple is believed to be preparing an ultrathin MacBook Air that incorporates a touchpad without buttons and functions without a fan. It is also expected to include a higher-resolution display.

iMac: A lower-priced iMac is believed to be on the horizon, which Kuo says could help boost iMac shipments by up to 23 percent. It could be Apple’s first product launch of the year.

Apple TV: Apple is not expected to launch a full television set this year, but an upgraded set top box with an App Store and motion control technology is expected.

While Kuo’s predictions do include many rumors that have previously surfaced over the past several months from a variety of sources, his roadmap gives a solid overview of what we might expect from Apple in 2014.

Apple’s Plans to Enhance Touch ID with Trackpad Capabilities and Display Integration Revealed

Late last week, we highlighted a pair of Apple patent applications offering details on the company’s implementation of its „Touch ID“ fingerprint sensor in the iPhone 5s. The highly technical patent applications showed how the system works and revealed that Apple first moved to protect the ideas with the filing of several provisional patent applications in May 2012.

A third Touch ID-related patent application filed by Apple also quietly surfaced last week (via Unwired View) but has flown under the radar until now because it appears to have published on the World Intellectual Property Organization’s database but not the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office’s database.

This third patent application is the most revealing yet with regard to Touch ID, showing how Apple has envisioned expanding the feature to incorporate trackpad functionalities, tracking movements of a user’s finger or thumb over the sensor to navigate through user interfaces on the device’s screen. In one example, Apple shows how a user moving his or her finger right to left across the Touch ID home button could pan a map, with a subsequent upward movement across the home button triggering activation of a multitasking interface.

Other examples show how users could take advantage of „revolving“ or „twisting“ motions of their fingerprints on the Touch ID home button to initiate actions. Adding the ability to recognize presses of various durations for the Touch ID home button and even sensors for detecting how hard the button is being pressed could offer even more powerful user interface navigation capabilities right from the home button.

Moving beyond the home button, Apple addresses the possibility of integrating Touch ID right into a device’s display, allowing any area of the screen to be dynamically designated as a sensing region for the user’s fingerprint. In one example, the area of a display representing the device’s email app could require a valid fingerprint touching the icon in order for authorization to be granted.

Overall, Apple’s patent application is a massive 610-page document incorporating 464 claims covering a wide range of applications for Touch ID in the future. Beyond the examples highlighted here, the application covers a number of other areas including:

– Enhanced touch typing recognition through sensing which fingers are touching the keys
– Using pressure and movement sensing to turn the home button into a simple game controller
– Using revolving „scroll wheel“ motions on the home button to navigate through multitasking app listings
– Using fingerprint verification to enforce parental controls on age-rated media content, restrict maximum device volume, or automatically increase font sizes for children, seniors, or visually-impaired users
– Autofilling web forms or loading personalized web pages based on fingerprint identification
– Supporting multi-user profiles including authorized and guest profiles through fingerprint authorization
– Authorizing location „check-ins“, mobile payment information, or photo/document author tagging based on fingerprint identification
– Supporting simultaneous multi-user configurations by allowing users to define separate areas of a device’s screen for drawings, notes, or other content based on fingerprint recognition

Apple’s patent application was filed on May 20, 2013, but cites as priority several provisional patent applications dated as far back as May 2012.
