‘Steve Jobs’ Award Wins Continue for Kate Winslet at BAFTA Ceremony

Danny Boyle’s Steve Jobs film continued its awards season wins last night, with Kate Winslet taking home the Best Supporting Actress award at The British Academy of Film and Television Arts on Sunday (via The Guardian). Winslet dedicated her win at the BAFTA ceremony to women who are the subject of unjustified body shame criticism, which she faced as a young woman trying to break into the industry.

“When I was younger, when I was 14, I was told by a drama teacher that I might do OK if I was happy to settle for the fat girl parts,” Winslet said. “So what I always feel in these moments is that any young woman who has ever been put down by a teacher, by a friend, by even a parent, just don’t listen to any of it, because that’s what I did – I kept on going and I overcame my fears and got over my insecurities.”

Winslet won for Best Supporting Actress at the Golden Globes in January as well, while Steve Jobs screenwriter Aaron Sorkin won for Best Screenplay. With a Golden Globe and now a BAFTA win, Winslet is set up to be a likely winner at the 88th Academy Awards taking place Sunday, February 28. At the Oscars, she will face all of the same actresses she beat at the BAFTA ceremony: Jennifer Jason Leigh (The Hateful Eight), Rooney Mara (Carol), and Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina), with the addition of Rachel McAdams (Spotlight).

Steve Jobs, which faced a troubled theatrical run following its poor box office performance, will be released on Blu-Ray, DVD, and Digital HD tomorrow, February 16.

Apple Music Now Has Over 10 Million Subscribers After Just 6 Months

Apple Music has surpassed 10 million subscribers across iOS, Mac, PC, Android and Apple TV in just six months, a milestone that took its largest rival Spotify around six years to accomplish, Financial Times reported on Sunday.

Apple Music, which launched in over 100 countries on June 30, 2015, has cemented its position as the world’s second largest streaming music service behind Spotify, which last announced reaching over 20 million paying subscribers and more than 75 million active users three weeks before Apple’s streaming service became available.

Spotify was an early entrant in the streaming music market when it launched in Europe in October 2008. The service did not expand to the U.S. until July 2011 due to lengthy negotiations with major record label companies, and it has since launched in nearly 100 countries and territories worldwide. Unlike Apple Music, Spotify also offers a free ad-supported tier with limited features on desktop and mobile.

Music industry analyst Mark Mulligan predicted last month that Apple Music would have 8 million subscribers by the end of 2015, and he expects the service to reach 20 million total users by the end of this year. At that pace, Apple Music could top Spotify as the largest streaming music service by number of subscribers in 2017, assuming that Spotify maintains around its current rate of growth.

Apple has reportedly internally set a goal of reaching 100 million Apple Music subscribers. Tim Cook confirmed 6.5 million paid subscribers last October.

Update: Spotify told Business Insider that it experienced its fastest subscriber growth ever in the second half of 2015, but did not provide an updated subscriber total.

Apple doesn’t often let outsiders into its secret design lab headed up by Jony Ive, but the company invited journalist Charlie Rose to tour the facility earlier this year. Footage from that trip is set to air this Sunday, December 20, on popular show 60 Minutes.

Teasers for the episode were revealed in a tweet from the 60 Minutes Twitter account this evening, depicting Charlie Rose alongside Jony Ive. The episode will also include a discussion with retail head Angela Ahrendts about Apple’s „store of the future“ and the company’s retail plans.

Charlie Rose has done notable interviews with Apple executives in the past, including Jony Ive and Marc Newson in 2013 and Tim Cook in 2014.

Wegmans Shoppers Club Card Showing Up in Apple Pay, but Full Rollout Not Coming Until 2016

Following yesterday’s official launch of the first Apple Pay-enabled loyalty card from Walgreens with its Balance Rewards program, a number of MacRumors readers reported that their Shoppers Club loyalty cards from grocery store chain Wegmans were also showing up in Apple Pay.

Early testing has shown that card readers at Wegmans stores are not yet accepting Shoppers Club cards via Apple Pay, and Wegmans’ June press release alongside Apple’s WWDC announcements pointed only to a „fall“ launch, so we contacted the company to ask for an update on Shoppers Club integration with Apple Pay.

„Wegmans will be testing loyalty card support via Apple Pay at one store later this year,“ a spokesperson told MacRumors. „If all goes well, we plan to roll that service out to all stores in 2016.“

The spokesperson declined to identify the specific store where Apple Pay Shoppers Club will be tested, but did note it will be in the company’s home market of Rochester, New York.

Wegmans is a popular grocery store chain that with a new store opening outside of Philadelphia this Sunday will have 88 locations in New York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Maryland, and Virginia. The chain is known for its large stores of up to 140,000 square feet with a focus on prepared foods, broad selection of items, and even in-store restaurants and childcare in some locations.

T-Mobile today introduced a new Jump on Demand smartphone trade-in program that enables customers to upgrade their smartphone up to three times per year with no fees or waiting times. The new program provides customers with a new smartphone with $0 due at signing in return for 18 monthly payments alongside the standard cost of a service plan. The smartphone can then be upgraded up to 3 times in a 12-month period at no cost.

„With Jump! On Demand, you make payments on your phone for 18 months. After 18 months, you can simply turn in your phone with nothing more to pay, or upgrade to your next new phone and start a new plan, or make a final payment and keep your phone. If you keep your phone and make the final payment, the total of your payments will equal the retail price of the phone. In addition, customers can pay off their JUMP! On Demand plan at any time by paying the remaining payments in advance, and keep their phone without penalty.“

Customers that cancel their T-Mobile wireless service in less than 18 months must pay the sum of their final monthly payments and return the working smartphone, or purchase the smartphone outright for a fee, such as $164 for the iPhone 6. Jump on Demand will be available for eligible devices at participating T-Mobile stores in the United States beginning Sunday, June 28.

T-Mobile is offering the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus through Jump On Demand for just $15 and $19 per month respectively for a limited time, prices that are unmatched by competing carriers. T-Mobile customers interested in the deal can sign up to receive updates about Jump On Demand through the carrier’s website.
