ESPN Brings WatchESPN Live Video Coverage Into Main iOS App

ESPN today announced an update to its iOS app that will let users stream live sporting events from the separate WatchESPN service directly within the core app, a feature that would previously redirect users to a separate download of WatchESPN. Specifically concerning videos, the ESPN app before today’s update only allowed for short clips and game highlights.

“Offering the convenience of live streaming within one app reinforces the value of the multichannel subscription,” said Sean Breen, Senior Vice President of Affiliate Sales, Disney & ESPN Media Networks. “Even with WatchESPN’s recent record-breaking viewership, we continue to be aggressive in driving awareness to a large scale audience and to incentivize video subscribers to authenticate.”

ESPN representatives promised that logging into the new app will be the same process as before, and users can expect to see a simple „WatchESPN“ tab at the bottom right of the screen. On the iPad, the app will also support multitasking with a picture-in-picture mode that keeps playback rolling even as users leave the app’s homepage.

The company noted that it will be keeping WatchESPN up on the App Store as a solo, „full experience,“ for those who specifically want live streaming capabilities and none of the various other game-tracking features of the base app. To use WatchESPN in any capacity, users have to check for support from their cable provider and then link the two accounts within the app.

ESPN mentioned that the move to consolidate its two popular mobile apps comes after „record-breaking audience viewership“ for its WatchESPN software across all platforms of its availability. September was its most-viewed month ever – excluding months the World Cup took place – with 11 million total viewers on the app that watched 2.2 billion minutes in total of ESPN content.

Sonnet Announces Availability of Long-Delayed Echo 15+ Thunderbolt 2 Dock

Sonnet this week announced the launch of its long-awaited Echo 15+ Thunderbolt 2 Dock, which is a 16-port docking station compatible with all Mac and Windows computers that feature Thunderbolt ports. It offers four USB 3.0 Ports, two 6Gb/s eSata ports, a FireWire 800 port, a Gigabit Ethernet port, two 3.5mm audio inputs, two 3.5mm audio outputs, and two Thunderbolt 2 ports.

A drive bay with 6Gb/s interfaces for one 3.5 inch or two 2.5-inch internal SATA drives is included, with support for SSD speeds of up to 750 MB/s. The USB 3.0 ports included in the dock provide 7.5 watts of power each for charging iPads, iPhones, and other electronic devices even when a computer is turned off.

The Echo 15+ also includes a built-in optical drive, and users are able to choose from an 8x DVD+/-RW drive, a Blu-ray BD-ROM/8x DVD+/-RW drive with Blu-ray player software for OS X, or a Blu-ray burner 4x BD-R/8x DVD+/-RW drive. Using an optical Thunderbolt cable and Sonnet’s Thunderbolt 2 expansion systems, the Echo 15+ can be connected to computer equipment located up to 60 meters away.

According to Sonnet, the Echo 15+’s aluminum case is sturdy enough to support the latest 27-inch iMac or a comparable display up to 34 inches.

„The Echo 15+ is the ultimate docking station for users to connect every device they need, including current and legacy devices – even the latest Ultra HD 4K displays – and expand their storage for backup or increased capacity in a single desktop device that connects to their computer with a Thunderbolt cable,“ said Greg LaPorte, vice president of sales and marketing, Sonnet Technologies. „With the option to add internal storage supporting data transfer rates of up to 750 MB/s, as well as the ability to read from and write to optical media including Blu-rayTM Disc, Sonnet’s Echo 15+ Thunderbolt 2 Dock is the go-to station for flexible connectivity.“

Sonnet first announced the Echo 15 Thunderbolt docking station in April of 2013 and began accepting pre-orders at that time. Following the launch of Thunderbolt 2, the dock was delayed in early 2014 as Sonnet decided to upgrade the device to support it, and nearly two years after that, the dock is finally ready.

Pricing on the Echo 15+ Thunderbolt 2 Dock starts at $469 for the version with a DVD+/-RW Drive and goes up to $999 for the version with a Blu-ray Burner and two included 500GB SSDs. The dock can be purchased from the Sonnet website.

Renderings Show Off Apple’s New Retail Store Alongside Chicago River

The Chicago Tribune has obtained an exclusive first look at Apple’s planned new flagship store in Chicago, which will be placed alongside the Chicago River. The new store will „echo“ legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright’s Prairie Style homes, which Wright pioneered near the city.

The store will be located near the historic Michigan Bridge and include a „grand flight of stairs“ that will go from street-level to a walkway alongside the Chicago River’s north bank. On the street-level side, the store will have an entry pavilion that’s 14-feet high. Pedestrians entering from N. Michigan Avenue will have to proceed downward onto the sales floor via stairs or an elevator.

The new flagship will have glass walls with a thin, high-strength carbon fiber roof. The 20,000 square-foot store will replace a vacant food court, and an Apple spokesman confirmed to the Chicago Tribune that it wants to start construction next year. The Tribune notes that the new store could be a „boon for the neighborhood“, shifting retail focus on Michigan Avenue further south and encouraging development of future architectural projects in the area.

The store is being headed by Norman Foster of Foster + Partners, Apple’s frequent architectural partner and the firm in charge of its new Cupertino headquarters. Apple is scheduled to present a proposal on the new store to the Chicago Plan Commission on Thursday, but a department spokesman told the Tribune that the presentation is a formality as the planning department has already approved the proposal. Additionally, Apple already has a deal in place with Zeller Realty Group, the owner of the territory the new Apple Store will reside on.

Apple’s current flagship store in Chicago is the four-story North Michigan Avenue store, which it has occupied since 2003. According to the Tribune, the new flagship could give Apple greater visibility in the area and higher sales. More renderings of the new store can be seen at the Chicago Tribune’s website.
