AT&T to Raise Price of Grandfathered Unlimited Plans From $30 to $35

AT&T will raise the price of its grandfathered unlimited data plans from $30 to $35 in February of 2016, reports CNBC. The upcoming rate change is detailed on a page on AT&T’s website and is the first price hike the unlimited plan has seen in seven years.

Though AT&T no longer offers unlimited data plans to customers, a small number of customers continue to hold unlimited data plans that were purchased before AT&T discontinued them in 2010. AT&T’s current $30 unlimited data plan allows customers to use an unlimited amount of data, but AT&T does throttle with excessive data usage.

As of February 16, the $30 price tag, which is in addition to voice costs, will rise to $35. The price hike comes just a couple of months after AT&T announced changes to its throttling practices. AT&T previously throttled customers on congested networks after 5GB of LTE data usage, but that cap was increased to 22GB in September, making unlimited plans more valuable.

AT&T plans to notify customers who will be impacted by the price increase. Customers who wish to cancel their wireless service because of the pricing increase will have early termination fees waived for affected lines. Price changes will take effect during each customer’s February billing period.

Apple Pencil to Ship With Adapter for Charging With Lightning Cable

Apple’s upcoming iPad Pro accessory, the Apple Pencil, will now ship with an adapter that will allow it to charge using a standard Lightning cable, reports 9to5Mac. The Apple Pencil, which has a Lightning connector on the end for charging, was originally designed to charge by plugging into the bottom of the iPad Pro.

With the adapter, which will fit over the Apple Pencil’s Lightning connector, it will also be able to charge using a regular Lightning cable. This will expand the number of ways the Apple Pencil can be charged and it will alleviate concerns about potential damage to the Apple Pencil from being knocked or bent while plugged into an iPad Pro.

The iPad Pro appears to be on track for a launch in the first weeks of November. AppleCare employees and retail staff are currently receiving training on the new larger-screened tablet, with the training completion deadline set for November 6.

Apple’s iPad Pro is the company’s new flagship 12.9-inch tablet. It includes an A9X processor, 4GB RAM, and according to Apple, is as fast as many desktop class machines. Pricing on the iPad Pro starts at $799 for a 32GB Wi-Fi only model and goes up to $1,079 for a 128GB Wi-Fi + Cellular model.

The Apple Pencil, which allows for pressure-sensitive drawing on the iPad Pro, is a standalone purchase that will be available for $99. Apple is also selling a Smart Keyboard for the iPad Pro, priced at $169.

Apple Debuts Beats ‘Active Collection’ Headphones With New Colors for Solo2, Tour2, and Powerbeats2

Apple today updated its lineup of Solo2 Wireless, Tour2, and Powerbeats 2 Wireless headphones, adding a trio of new colors as part of a new „Active Collection.“ The Beats Tour2 In-Ear Headphones, Solo2 Wireless Headphones, and Powerbeats2 Wireless In-Ear Headphones are now available in simple primary shades of Blue, Yellow, and Red.

There are no changes to the hardware or the pricing of the three sets of headphones, and the Active Collection joins the existing range of color options for each product. Apple will likely begin offering the new Active Collection in its retail stores in the near future, and each of the three products is available immediately from the online store.

Both the Active Collection Solo2 Wireless Headphones and the Powerbeats2 Wireless In-Ear Headphones will ship out to customers immediately with next day shipping, but the Tour2 In-Ear Headphones lists a delivery date of Tuesday, September 29.

Pricing for the Active Collection starts at $129.95 for the Tour2, with the PowerBeats2 priced at $199.95 and the Solo2 priced at $299.95.

New iCloud Pricing Tiers for All Countries Outlined in Updated Support Document

At last week’s „Hey Siri“ media event, Apple announced new iCloud pricing tiers, expanding the amount of storage provided to users. The company has now updated its iCloud support document to outline the new pricing information in all countries where iCloud storage is available.

While Apple previously offered iCloud storage in 5GB, 20GB, 200GB, 500GB and 1TB tiers, the new tiers include only 50GB, 200GB, or 1TB of storage at lower prices. With the old pricing, 20GB of storage in the U.S. cost $0.99, but now users will get 50GB for the same price. 200GB was formerly priced at $3.99 and is now $2.99, and 1TB of storage, previously priced at $19.99, is now $9.99.

Pricing in 24 countries in the Middle East, Asia, and Europe are included in the support document. Countries where local currency isn’t supported will have storage upgrades billed in dollars, and Eurozone countries will be charged in Euros. For countries with Value Added Tax, VAT is included in the iCloud pricing.

Customers who purchased monthly plans before September 16, 2015, will have their accounts upgraded automatically, presumably when iOS 9 launches tomorrow. Customers on an annual plan will continue to renew annually at that rate.

Apple Starts Selling Third-Party Apple Watch Accessories in Retail Stores

As of today, Apple has begun selling third-party Apple Watch accessories in its retail stores. The first third-party Apple Watch product Apple is offering on store shelves is ElevationLabs’ NightStand for Apple Watch.

Priced at $29.95, the NightStand is a simple, affordable Apple Watch stand that was one of the first Apple Watch stands on the market. The NightStand was originally offered only in blue, black, and red, but it appears the company partnered with Apple to offer stands that match each of the Apple Watch Sport bands. Apple is selling the NightStand in pink, blue, green, black, and white.

We visited an Apple Store in North Carolina, where the NightStands are on display next to the Apple Watch Sport bands, Apple Watch chargers, and matching Beats headphones.

The NightStand is one of the few Apple Watch stands available for purchase that supports iOS 9’s upcoming Nightstand Mode, which may be one of the reasons why Apple chose it for retail stores. With Nightstand Mode, the Apple Watch is able to serve as an alarm clock while charging.

According to a source that spoke to MacRumors, the NightStand from ElevationLabs is the only Apple Watch accessory Apple is offering for now, but additional accessories might start appearing in stores in September. ElevationLabs’ NightStand is currently only available in retail stores and is not yet being offered online.

Apple’s decision to begin offering third-party Apple Watch accessories comes amid a major revamp of its retail stores. As of today, Apple retail stores no longer have iPad „smart signs“ that display pricing information and product details next to each product for sale.

Instead, Apple’s display products, such as iPhones, iPads, and Macs, now include a dedicated „Pricing“ app that users can open up to get pricing information.

In recent months, Apple Stores have been undergoing some significant transformations. Along with the removal of the smart signs to reduce clutter and confusion, Apple has also slimmed down on the number of accessories for a more refined look. In the future, many accessories will also feature Apple-designed packaging.
