How to Reset Apple’s Thunderbolt Display

Apple’s Thunderbolt Display, for myriad reasons, may not display an image from your Mac, recognize USB peripherals, connect to Ethernet, or power on whatsoever.

In many cases, the display is not broken. Before contacting Apple, follow these troubleshooting steps to see if you can reset your Thunderbolt Display.

Update OS X

As a preliminary measure, it is recommended that you update your Mac to the latest version of OS X.

  1. Click on the Apple logo in the top-left menu bar.
  2. Click on About This Mac in the dropdown menu.
  3. Click on the Software Update… button.
  4. Click on the Update button next to the latest OS X version in the Mac App Store.

Power Cycle for 30 Seconds

Shut down and disconnect both your Mac and Thunderbolt Display from AC power for at least 30 seconds.

  1. Disconnect the Thunderbolt Display’s MagSafe cable from your Mac.
  2. Disconnect the Thunderbolt Display from AC power by unplugging the cord.
  3. Disconnect all USB peripherals and any cables plugged into the Thunderbolt Display.
  4. Wait at least 30 seconds before powering on your Mac and Thunderbolt Display.

Reset Your Mac’s SMC

Intel-based Macs have a System Management Controller (SMC) that can be reset as a possible fix for Thunderbolt Display issues.

These instructions are for Mac notebooks with non-removable batteries.

  1. Shut down the Mac.
  2. Plug in a MagSafe or USB-C power adapter to a power source and to your computer.
  3. On the Mac’s built-in keyboard, press the left side Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button simultaneously.
  4. Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
  5. Press the power button to turn on the Mac.

Apple provides steps for Macs with removable batteries, and the Mac Pro, iMac and Mac mini, on its support website.

On Macs with MagSafe power adapters, the cable’s LED might change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

Reset Your Mac’s NVRAM or PRAM

NVRAM, short for „non-volatile random-access memory,“ stores certain settings even when your Intel-based Mac is turned off. On older Macs, it is known as PRAM.

  1. Shut down the Mac.
  2. Turn on the Mac.
  3. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys immediately after you hear the startup sound.
  4. Hold these keys until the Mac restarts and you hear the startup sound for a second time.
  5. Release the keys.

After resetting NVRAM, you may need to reconfigure the Mac’s settings for speaker volume, screen resolution, startup disk selection, and time zone information.

Use a Standalone Thunderbolt Cable

Try connecting a standalone Thunderbolt cable between your Mac and Thunderbolt Display. If this resolves the issue, then possibly your Thunderbolt Display’s dual MagSafe-Thunderbolt cable is damaged.

Contact Apple

If none of the troubleshooting methods worked above, it is recommended that you contact Apple Support by calling 1-800-MY-APPLE, scheduling a Genius Bar appointment or choosing another option. You may also consider visiting an Apple Authorized Service Provider if your Thunderbolt Display requires repair.

How to undo accidental time skips on Siri Remote

The new Apple TV’s Siri Remote is great, except for all of those times that it isn’t. We’ve run afoul of the remote’s touchpad a few times; it’s fine for navigating (and less fine for entering passwords), but sometimes it does its job too well. For example, we can’t even count the number of times […]

Tim Cook: Apple Watch Sales ‘Exceeded Expectations’

As expected, Apple did not share specific sales numbers on the Apple Watch during its third quarter earnings call, but Apple CEO Tim Cook did shed some light on how well the Apple Watch did during its first quarter of availability. According to Cook, Apple Watch sales „exceeded expectations“ despite supply continuing to trail demand at the end of the quarter. „We feel really great about how we did,“ he said.

Cook also pointed out that Apple Watch sales during their first few months of availability were higher than sales of the original iPad and iPhone when those devices first became available for sale. June sales, he said, were higher than those in April or May.

Apple includes the Apple Watch in its „Other Products“ category in an effort to keep its competitors from getting a detailed look at its shipments. Other Products includes the Apple Watch, the iPod, the Apple TV, and accessories like Beats headphones.

During the third quarter of 2015, the Other Products category saw $2.6 billion in revenue, up from $1.7 billion during the second quarter of 2015, a difference of nearly a billion.

Cook said „it would not be inaccurate“ to look at the sequential change or the year over year change and „assume that’s the Apple Watch revenue,“ hinting that Apple Watch revenue in the quarter hovered around $1 billion or higher. Apple CFO Luca Maestri made a similar statement to the Associated Press, stating revenue from the Apple Watch amounted to „well over“ the $952 million increase between the two quarters. Both Maestri and Cook also pointed out that iPod and accessory sales, which are also included in the category, are shrinking.

Aside from analyst estimates that range from an estimated 2.85 million sales to 5.7 million, the $1 billion revenue difference between Q2 and Q3 is the closest we’ve come to learning how many devices Apple sold.

Cook went on to say that beyond the „very good news in sales,“ Apple is excited about how the Apple Watch is positioned for the long term. There are now 8,500 apps available for the device, and the company is poised to release watchOS 2 in the fall, which will bring native apps and performance improvements. „We believe the possibilities for Apple watch are enormous,“ said Cook.

How to Get the Most Accurate Heart Rate Reading on Apple Watch [iOS Blog]

Apple Watch features a heart rate monitor to help guide you through your workout sessions, tracking your heart rate while you exercise to better determine the amount of calories you burn during your activities.

The monitor also automatically tries to measure your heart rate every 10 minutes, but doesn’t record the data if your arm is moving. That is why your Health app doesn’t reflect a reading at every 10 minutes on the dot, but shows varying intervals of readings.

If you want to get a quick, accurate measurement of your heart rate manually you can do so in Glances.

The heart rate sensor is on the backside of the Apple Watch case and is made up of two different sets of special lights that monitor the blood flow through your wrist. Because the sensors absorb light through your skin, there are a few factors that affect the accuracy of a heart rate reading.

By following a few tips, as well as calibrating Apple Watch for workouts, you will get a better heart rate reading, thus improving the device’s ability to more determine how many calories you burn.

A Proper Fit

As simple as it sounds, a good fit is key to getting an accurate heart rate reading. Some people don’t like the way it feels to have their watch snug on their wrist, but for the purposes of a proper reading, you’ll need to keep it tight. When you hold your wrist out, there should be no gap between Apple Watch and your skin.

If the feeling is just too uncomfortable for you to wear the device snug to your wrist, it might be a good idea to adjust the band differently for different activities. If you are working out, tighten it up one notch until you are done.

Avoid Cold Weather Workouts

The heart rate sensor is affected by how much blood flows through your skin. In cold weather, we tend to produce less blood flow near the surface of the skin as the blood is rerouted to warm more important parts of our bodies (it is why our fingers and noses get so cold). Some people enjoy jogging in the snow, but keep in mind that this may have an affect on an accurate heart rate reading from your Apple Watch.

Avoid Irregular Motion

Apple Watch gets a better reading when you’ve calibrated it by walking or running for 20 minutes. It tracks the rhythm of your movement and adjusts its data accordingly.

However, irregular movement, like playing tennis or boxing, will confuse the sensor and reduce its accuracy. So, for such workouts that have you swinging your arms wildly, be aware that your heart rate reading may not be as accurate as you would like.

Troubleshooting

If, for some reason, the heart rate monitor on your Apple Watch stops working, you may need to restart or reset the device.

  1. Press and hold the Side button until the power off slider bar appears and slide it to turn off Apple Watch.
  2. Press and hold the Side button again until the Apple Watch logo appears.

If that does not work, try resetting your Apple Watch.

  1. On Apple Watch, open the Settings app and tap General.
  2. Tap Reset. Then tap „Erase All Content and Settings.“
  3. Re-pair Apple Watch with your iPhone.

Although it is not an exact science, the heart rate monitor on Apple Watch is a useful way of tracking your activities and getting a better estimate on how many calories you burn. Following the tips above will improve accuracy of the light-absorbing sensors.

How to Download, Install, and Arrange Apps on Apple Watch [iOS Blog]

One thing that makes Apple Watch stand out from other smart watches is the app ecosystem. Since there are already more than a million iPhone apps in the App Store, there were already plenty of developers ready to get to work building companions for the wrist worn device. When the Apple Watch launched, there were already 3,500 apps available, and that number grows on a day-by-day basis.

One of the best ways to customize your Apple Watch to fit your needs is to download all the apps you want and to organize them for easy access. We’ve got a tutorial that covers downloading apps from your iPhone, installing them on your Apple Watch, and rearranging them on your Home screen.

Downloading Apps for Apple Watch

At the current time, all Apple Watch apps are powered by the iPhone, which means they’re bundled into iPhone apps. Apple Watch apps are downloaded by downloading a compatible app onto your iPhone, which can be done from the regular App Store or through the „Apple Watch App Store“ located within the Apple Watch companion app on your iPhone. The Apple Watch companion app has an icon that looks like a watch and is automatically installed on all iOS devices running iOS 8.2 or later.

  1. Open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap „Featured“ to visit the Apple Watch App Store.
  3. Find the apps you wish to add to your collection and download them the way you would with an iPhone app. If it is already on your iPhone, you will see „Open.“ If you have previously downloaded the app, but it is not currently on your iPhone, you will see the iCloud icon.
  4. Alternatively, you can open the regular App Store on your iPhone or Mac and look for apps that are tagged with „Offers Apple Watch app for iPhone.“

Installing Apps on Apple Watch

When you first set up your Apple Watch, you will have the option to automatically add all available Apple Watch apps already on your iPhone, or you can manage which ones you install manually via the Apple Watch app. Chances are, without even downloading a single app, you probably already have a number of compatible ones already on your iPhone.

  1. Open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap „My Watch“ to find the settings section of your Apple Watch.
  3. Scroll down to the list of Apple Watch compatible apps that are on your iPhone
  4. Tap on an app you wish to add to Apple Watch
  5. Toggle the Show App on Apple Watch switch to the On position.
  6. Do the same for apps that you wish to include Glances for when available.
  7. On Apple Watch, you will see a message prompting you to install the app. Select Yes.

There is a setting in the General section of the Apple Watch companion app that allows you to choose whether or not apps with new or updated Apple Watch functionality will be automatically installed on your Apple Watch. If this option is turned off, you’ll have to manually add these apps to your Apple Watch from the companion app on your iPhone.

Arranging Apps on Apple Watch Home Screen

Similar to the iPhone or iPad, you can rearrange the app icons on Apple Watch so the most-used ones are easiest to access. There are two ways to rearrange app icons on your Apple Watch Home screen.

On iPhone

  1. Open the Apple Watch App on the iPhone.
  2. Tap „My Watch“ and then tap App Layout.
  3. Touch and hold an app until it wiggles. Then, drag it to its new location.
  4. You can tap „Reset“ to restore the original app layout.

On Apple Watch

  1. Press the Digital Crown to go to the Home screen.
  2. Touch and hold an app until it wiggles. Then, drag it to its new location.
  3. Press the Digital Crown again when finished.

You can also make adjustments to the settings of some installed Apple Watch apps. Open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone, tap My Watch, and scroll down to the app you wish to adjust the settings for.

Once you’ve added apps to your Apple Watch and arranged your Home Screen just right, you’ll be ready to use all the apps you’ve installed. You can scroll through all of your apps with a finger, using the Digital Crown to zoom in. Launch your apps by zooming all the way in with the Digital Crown or with a simple tap on the app’s icon.

Apple Partners With SunPower Corporation to Build Two Solar Power Plants in China [Mac Blog]

Environmentally conscious solar panel manufacturer SunPower Corporation today announced a partnership with Apple that will result in two solar power projects totaling 40 megawatts in the „environmentally-preserved“ ABA Region of China’s Sichuan Province.

Currently under construction, the projects will be split across two sites both eventually totaling 20 megawatts each. The first site, located in Hongyuan, is already generating 2 megawatts of power thanks to technology that includes single-axis tracking with rows of parabolic mirrors that reflect light onto SunPower’s „Maxeon“ cells, „which are the world’s most efficient commercially available mass-produced solar cells.“ The second project is located in Ruoergai County.

As the first solar powered projects deployed in the ABA Region, the combined sites are expected to churn out up to 80 million kilowatt-hours each year. Upon completion, each project will be co-owned by Apple and Sichuan Shengtian New Energy Development Co., Ltd, SunPower’s project development joint venture. Work on both sites is expected to be completed by the fourth quarter of 2015.

Speaking with The Associated Press, Lisa Jackson, Apple’s vice president for environmental initiatives, discussed the new China-focused solar power project, suggesting the company’s partnership with SunPower in the region is only the start of a bigger environmentally-focused push by Apple.

„It’s important to us to tackle climate change everywhere we are,“ Jackson told The Associated Press. „When you talk about China, you’re talking about manufacturing partners. We’re looking to bring the same innovation there. This is the start.“

„Before we go somewhere else and start asking and eventually requiring clean energy, you want to make sure you show folks how to do it,“ said Jackson, who was U.S. Environmental Protection Agency administrator during President Barack Obama’s first term.

Apple and SunPower have collaborated stateside in the past, with six plants ranging from California to Nevada and North Carolina. Today’s announcements mark the first international solar power partnership between Apple and SunPower.

Apple Releases New Holiday Ad ‘The Song’

Apple today released a new 90-second holiday ad entitled „The Song“, following in the footsteps of last year’s „Misunderstood“ ad.

„The Song“ centers around a girl who stumbles upon an old record, apparently a gift from her grandmother to her grandfather from 1952. The record includes a message about not being able to be together for the holidays and then a rendition of „Love Is Here to Stay“ sung by the grandmother.

Upon finding the old record, the girl secretly learns the tune’s vocals and puts together her own accompaniment on several instruments, eventually recording her own portions of the song alongside her grandmother’s. The girl then leaves an iPad mini with a note saying „A Duet, Press Play“ for her grandmother, who listens to the duet between her much younger self and her granddaughter, bringing her to tears as she looks through the old photographs left along with the iPad by the girl.

The new ad is currently being featured on apple.com and should be added to Apple’s YouTube site shortly.

Apple Says iOS 8.0.2 Update is in the Works, Directs Users to Reinstall iOS 8

Earlier today, Apple released iOS 8.0.1, which ended up disabling cellular service and Touch ID on many iPhone 6 and 6 Plus devices. Apple said that it was investigating the issue this afternoon, and it has now released a support document confirming that an iOS 8.0.2 update is in the works with a fix.

In addition to announcing the upcoming update, the document also points users towards an interim fix involving reinstalling iOS 8 via iTunes.

The document offers the same advice Apple support representatives have been giving to customers since the issue first surfaced, directing users to download iOS 8 and reinstall it on their devices using iTunes. Apple’s specific steps are as follows:

Follow these steps to reinstall iOS 8.0.

1. Make sure that you’re using the latest version of iTunes.

2. Connect your iPhone to iTunes.

3. Back up your iPhone in iTunes on your Mac or PC. iCloud backups won’t restore to earlier versions, including iOS 8.0.

4. Download the file below that corresponds to your device:
iPhone 6
iPhone 6 Plus

5. Select the file you just downloaded by doing one of these in iTunes:
– Mac: Press the Option key and click Check for Update.
– Windows: Press the Shift key and click Check for Update.

6. Press Update to install iOS 8 on your iPhone.

The Health app won’t work in iOS 8 after these steps. It will be fixed in our upcoming iOS 8.0.2 software update.

Apple has pulled the iOS 8.0.1 over-the-air update, but the software was available to customers for approximately an hour and fifteen minutes, leaving many users with broken devices. According to the Apple, iOS 8.0.2 is already in the works with a fix and will be ready „in the next few days.“

iOS 8.0.1 originally fixed a significant HealthKit bug that popped up just ahead of the public release of iOS 8. Apple pulled all HealthKit enabled apps from the App Store due to the issue, and iOS 8.0.1 fixed the original bug, allowing the apps to be redistributed. The update also included fixes for third-party keyboards, Reachability, Photo Library, SMS/MMS messages, and more.
