Apple Campus 2 Construction Progresses as Parking Garage and Event Theater Take Shape

As work on Apple’s Campus 2 in Cupertino has continued throughout the fall, the spaceship-shaped structure has rapidly grown from basic foundations to the beginnings of an actual structure. Now, thanks some aerial shots recently taken by AppleInsider‘s DJI Phantom 2 Vision Plus drone, the construction site appears to be moving along rapidly with concrete slab poured around the ring of the structure and a few dozen cranes working across the site.

As noted by AppleInsider, the earth-built ramps previously used to gain access to the site are now gone following the installation of the concrete floor. Instead, work on an underground channel access has begun, with plans to connect the main employee entrance off of Wolfe Road to the garage underneath the main structure and the two above-ground parking garages.

One of the biggest advancements to the campus worth noting is the separate 120,000 square foot „event center“ that is costing the company around $161 million and will house an auditorium and product demo space for the company’s media events. The outline of the primarily underground structure has received more definition alongside a surrounding bank that will eventually be tree-lined.

The parking facility, which includes an underground segment, is also rising rapidly, and is currently built up to the third level. It’s the first of two similar structures being built that will together provide parking spaces for over 5,000 cars visiting the campus.

Though construction has continued steadily throughout the last half of 2014, the Apple’s Campus 2 obviously still has a long way to go until completion. Besides the main „spaceship“ structure, event theater, fitness center, and parking garages, Apple also submitted revised plans in October adding a few offices, testing facilities, and additional parking garages onto the second phase of construction. The complete campus is expected to be finished by the end of 2016.

Parrot Bebop Drone Landing at Apple Stores in December for $499 [iOS Blog]

Drone maker Parrot today finalized the pricing for its upcoming Bebop drone, confirming a $499 price tag for the standard package and $899 for the more expensive SkyController version with an extended range wireless controller.

The Bebop drone is Parrot’s third-generation quadricopter and the successor to the popular AR Drone. The Bebop offers noticeable improvements in camera recording, including a 14-megapixel camera with 1080P full-HD video support and the ability to stream a captured feed to a compatible smartphone or tablet device.

Other notable features include an f/2.2 fish-eye lens with an 180-degree angle of view and three-axis image stabilization. The stabilization allows users to digitally pan and zoom in a semi-circle without the need for a bulky gimbal underneath the body of the drone. The Drone also connects to an iPhone via the updated FreeFLight 3.0 software, which allows the user to control the drone, view flight details, and execute complex maneuvers via on-screen touch controls.

For those looking for enhanced piloting controls, Parrot has also developed a new SkyController that extends the range of the drone from 200 meters to 2 kilometers. It also connects to first-person view glasses like the Oculus Rift, providing pilots with an immersive flight experience.

The Parrot Bebop drone will go on sale in December and will be available in both Best Buy and Apple retail and online stores. Pricing starts at $499 for the standard edition and climbs to $899 for the SkyController edition. Parrot’s competitive pricing undercuts its closest competitor, the DJI Phantom 2, which retails for $679.

New Aerial Video Shows Significant Construction Progress at Apple Campus 2 [Mac Blog]

Apple appears to be making significant progress on its forthcoming „Spaceship“ campus in Cupertino, as an aerial video shared by YouTube user jmcminn (via Apple Spotlight/9to5Mac) shows the site now featuring significantly constructed walls, spots for buildings, and a more defined oval shape.

Apple closed off sidewalks and built a number of privacy fences to keep the area hidden, but this latest video taken with a DJI Phantom 2 drone and GoPro camera goes above the site to show an assortment of vehicles and materials helping to build Apple’s newest campus. Previous photos showed initial work on the site’s walls and deep trenches for what was said to be „underground tunnels.“ The site was once the home of Hewlett Packard’s former offices, which were vacated and demolished by Apple ahead of its initial work on its Campus 2 project.

Apple is currently at work on the first phase of its Campus 2 construction, which includes the 2.8 million square foot ring-shaped main building and an underground parking facility capable of holding 2,400 cars. Those structures will also be complemented by a 100,000 square foot fitness center and a 120,000 square foot auditorium, with some of the landscape being occupied by more than 4,500 trees.

The first phase of construction is expected to be completed by 2016, and will be followed by additional 600,000 square feet of buildings along with another parking structure in the second phase.
