KidGPS lets you keep track of your brood from your iPhone

I remember the day I was way late from school and met up with my frantic mother as I walked home. She was walking quickly and carrying a metal comb with a pointy handle. This was for stabbing my attackers, or at least the ones that entered her mind as she fretted. Of course, technology […]

Apple Releases Four New Apple Watch Ads Showing the Device Used in Daily Life

Apple today released a new series of Apple Watch commercials on its YouTube channel, depicting the Apple Watch being used in a number of ways in the daily lives of the people featured in the videos. Each of the four videos centers around people who use the watch’s functions while traveling, while working out, and while communicating with and interacting with family.

Two of the videos, „Berlin“ and „Beijing,“ show the Apple Watch in use as a tool to discover new places to visit while exploring the cities. Two women are seen using the app to get directions to places, look up nearby restaurants, and discover new sights as soft music plays in the background of each video.

The third video, „Closer,“ shows the Apple Watch being used by parents and children, playing tic tac toe, starting up music, and communicating with family through sketches and calls.

Apple’s fourth commercial is focused on fitness and shows the Apple Watch encouraging people to be more active. Individuals in the videos struggle through their workouts during classes, runs, martial arts lessons, and more.

Today’s ads follow in the footsteps of the first human-centric Apple Watch ads Apple created to promote the device, which were released in April. „Rise,“ „Up,“ and „Us“ focused on time management, health and fitness, and communication.

Tim Cook Says Diversity is the Future of Apple, Points to More Female-Driven Presence at WWDC [Mac Blog]

Apple CEO Tim Cook spoke with Mashable at a ceremony yesterday honoring the recipients of the company’s WWDC Scholarship Program, which awards up to 350 students and developers with tickets to the week-long Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco.

The program aims to promote diversity amongst lesser-represented groups in the tech industry – such as women – by awarding tickets to WWDC for excelling in various technological or science-driven education environments. Today, when asked by Mashable why diversity is so important to Apple, Tim Cook responded simply that, „It’s the future of our company.“

Tim Cook posing with a WWDC scholarship winner

„I view these people that I talk to today as the future generations of the company, and they will either be a part of it directly or a part of the ecosystem. And either way — when I think of Apple, I think of the whole community, not just the people that have the Apple badge.“

And that future, according to Cook, should be diverse: „I think the most diverse group will produce the best product, I firmly believe that,“ he says. Even without taking its values into account, Apple is a „better company“ by being more diverse.

Given that Apple keynotes have historically been spearheaded by white male presenters, many wondered when Apple’s forward-thinking efforts in diversity would trickle down into the public spotlight at one of its big keynote events. When asked about just that, Cook hints that a more female-driven presence may occur later today at WWDC. „Look tomorrow,“ Cook said. „Look tomorrow and let me know what you think.“

Although not an official employee of Apple, model and founder of non-profit organization „Every Mother Counts“ Christy Turlington Burns partnered with the company in showcasing various uses of the Apple Watch in a weekly blog meant to build up excitement for the wearable, after first appearing on stage at the March „Spring Forward“ event.

Christy Turlington Burns Breaks Personal Record at London Marathon [iOS Blog]

Over the past few weeks since Apple’s „Spring Forward“ event, model and founder of non-profit organization Every Mother Counts Christy Turlington Burns has kept a blog on Apple’s official website describing her use of the Apple Watch in helping her prepare for the Virgin Money 2015 London Marathon.

It's about that time…Wish me luck and some speed #everymileeverymother @everymomcounts sub 4hrs #applewatch

A photo posted by Christy Turlington Burns (@cturlington) on Apr 26, 2015 at 1:44am PDT

After finishing the marathon yesterday, Burns posted a time of 3 hours and 46 minutes, flying just under her goal time of 3 hours and 55 minutes (via The Telegraph).

Angled as a seven week build-up to the 2015 London Marathon, Burns’ final blog entry was posted last week, also timing itself with the official launch of the Apple Watch last Friday. As Burns mentioned in her latest post for Apple, „as a 46‑year‑old mom, I’m proud of my under‑4‑hour goal“, even though most „extreme“ athletes can get a finish time under the 3 hour mark.

Burns used a variety of Apple Watch features over the nearly-two-months she trained for the marathon, from praising the dexterity of the Watch in learning personal stride and workout preferences to the subtle encouragement of filling every activity ring each day.

Although her role in the launch of the Apple Watch can be seen as purely promotional, she did shed some light on unknown features concerning lesser-discussed portions of the Watch’s abilities, including the fact that after a few runs paired with an iPhone, the Watch can work independently of the iPhone over time.
