GoPro Updates iOS App With Streamlined Design and Apple Watch Integration

GoPro today announced an update to its iOS app that will bring Apple Watch integration to users of the popular outdoor recording hardware. The new Apple Watch features will give users access to a GoPro camera’s controls, letting them preview their shot, toggle between capture modes, begin and end recording, and even add HiLight tags to important moments in a video.

Also introduced in the 2.11 version of the GoPro app is the ability to browse frame-by-frame through a video and capture still images from it. The company has streamlined media browsing in the app as well, with easier-to-discover photos, videos, HiLights and clips, along with some expanded iOS abilities that make „nearly everything“ available on the Apple version of the software that was previously restricted on mobile.

New and Improved:

+ Now compatible with Apple Watch: Preview shots, control your camera, and add HiLight Tags all from your watch.

+ Pull still images from videos: Quickly flip through a video frame-by-frame to find that epic moment and download a high-quality still image.

+ Find your media faster: Locate that awesome shot by filtering your media to display only photos, videos, HiLights, or clips.

+ Nearly everything is viewable on iOS: Enjoy your shot on the spot with a generated preview that allows you to view high frame-rate video on your phone.

The GoPro App is available to download from the App Store for free [Direct Link].

FiftyThree today announced an update to its popular drawing and illustration app Paper that will give users of the app free access to every tool and feature previously locked behind an in-app purchase.

The app is free to download, but users who wanted a more in-depth editing and drawing suite had to pay up to $3.99 for the entire „essential tools“ package (originally priced at $7.99) to get access to the best of the bunch. FiftyThree sells a popular companion stylus called Pencil, which Apple recently began stocking in its retail locations. The Pencil, available in Graphite, Walnut, and now Gold, can also be purchased directly from FiftyThree’s official website in prices ranging from $49.95 to $59.95.

Google Launches Newsstand App for Android, Promises iOS App in 2014

Google today launched a Newsstand app for Android, which combines its existing Flipboard-style Currents app, its Google Play magazine app, and a new newspaper subscription service to offer a variety of paid and free publications in one spot.

The new Google Newsstand app shares a name with Apple’s own Newsstand and it also mimics the functionality of the built-in app that Apple first debuted in 2011. As with Apple’s Newsstand, Google’s Newsstand aggregates content in one convenient location, combining all of a user’s subscriptions for magazines and newspapers.

Google does, however, go one step further, combining content from an array of sources into a single newsfeed, and the company has also partnered with multiple publications to offer subscriptions directly within its app. Google Newsstand shares several similarities with Apple Newsstand, but it is arguably more useful with its in-app subscriptions and its Flipboard-style feed.

Discover more of the news and magazines you care about on your Android tablet or phone. Enjoy breaking news and in-depth articles featuring audio, video, and more. From sports, business, cooking, entertainment, fashion and more – now get the best free and paid news plus vibrant full HD magazines, all in one place.

While Google’s new Newsstand app is currently limited to Android devices, the company told TechCrunch that it plans to update its existing Currents app for iOS to a Newsstand app „early next year,“ where it will presumably compete with Apple’s own Newsstand app.

In the past, Apple has not taken kindly to companies who adopt similar product names, famously filing a trademark lawsuit against Amazon over the use of the word „Appstore.“ Both Amazon and Microsoft argued that „app store“ was a generic term, and the case was eventually thrown out.
