Sony Releases ‘PlayStation Messages’ App for iOS

Shortly after its PlayStation Experience 2015 event in San Francisco this weekend, Sony has released a brand new app called PlayStation Messages, which allows PlayStation 4 owners to chat with their friends on the go. While the standard PlayStation app had built-in messaging functionality, it’s been split into its own app like how Facebook did with Facebook Messenger.

The app allows PlayStation Network users to send their friends text, voice and picture messages in addition to stickers of PlayStation game characters like Knack and Uncharted’s Nathan Drake. The app also allows for group messaging.

The standard PlayStation app was also updated today with the ability to follow verified users and the removal of the messaging functionality.

PlayStation Messages is a universal app that’s available in the App Store for free. [Direct Link]

Apple May Be Producing Exclusive Apple Music Content In-House

Earlier today Apple Music exclusively debuted a new music video from Drake, titled „Energy“ from his latest album „If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late“. Previously, Apple has exclusively debuted the music videos for Pharrell’s „Freedom“ and Eminem’s „Phenomenal„. These music videos may be developed in-house at Apple, reports Pitchfork.

The launch of Apple Music hasn’t only included a new radio station, social network, and streaming service. Apple have also started creating their own original content. The company made Drake’s amazing „Energy“ video in-house, as well as Pharrell’s „Freedom“ and Eminem’s „Phenomenal“. Next up: M.I.A.’s „Matahdatah Scroll 01 Broader Than a Border“, coming to Apple Music on Monday, July 13.

In addition to M.I.A.’s forthcoming music video, Pitchfork, which is an Apple Music Curation Partner, says rumors indicate that Apple Music has projects in the works with artists like Purity Ring, Diddy and James Bay. However, M.I.A.’s music video has been in the works since before May, when the artist insinuated that her label was holding up her „Matahdatah“ music video because of potential controversy around its cultural appropriation of African culture.

Pitchfork claims that when they reached out to Larry Jackson, Apple Music’s head of content, for comment he responded with a tweet consisting of a dig at Spotify CEO Daniel Elk’s „Oh ok“ tweet when Apple Music was announced in addition to the hashtags „Content“, „Curation“, „Culture“ and a link to Drake’s music video on Apple Music.

Apple has been trying to secure exclusive content for its new streaming service in an effort to lure customers away from rival services like Spotify and Tidal. That effort continues with Drake, who today announced he’ll have a radio show on Beats 1 that’ll start on Saturday, July 11 at 6 PM EST.

Apple Looking to Sign Drake, Pharrell and David Guetta as iTunes Radio Guest DJs

Apple is in talks to sign Toronto-born rapper Drake, hip-hop artist Pharrell Williams and electronic music DJ David Guetta as guest DJs for a revamped iTunes Radio, according to the New York Post. The report also claims that Apple continues to negotiate with record labels for Apple Music and wants to offer a three-month free trial period for the $10-a-month streaming music service.

Apple Music will reportedly combine the best features of Pandora, Spotify and YouTube into one service, including streaming music and video, artist pages, a YouTube-style sharing section called Apple Connect and a refreshed version of iTunes Radio. Apple also wanted to offer lyrics as part of the service, but does not want to pay extra to record labels to offer the feature.

Apple is expected to announce its new streaming music service on June 8 at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco, building upon the assets it acquired through its Beats Music purchase last year. The company will reportedly push customers to sign up for Apple Music by offering SoundCloud-like sharing, exclusive content and the aforementioned three-month free trial period.
