Tim Cook: iPad Pro Will Replace Notebooks and Desktops for ‘Many, Many People’

Ahead of the launch of the iPad Pro, Apple executives have been doing a series of interviews to drum up excitement and interest in the device. Earlier today, The Independent published an interview with Tim Cook where he shared his thoughts on the Apple Pencil and the iPad Pro’s target market.

This afternoon, The Telegraph published a second interview where Tim Cook spoke further on his vision of the iPad Pro as a PC replacement and how tablets are subsuming the PC market. According to Cook, the iPad Pro will serve as a replacement for a notebook or desktop computer for „many, many people.“

„I think if you’re looking at a PC, why would you buy a PC anymore? No really, why would you buy one?“ […]

„Yes, the iPad Pro is a replacement for a notebook or a desktop for many, many people. They will start using it and conclude they no longer need to use anything else, other than their phones.“

Cook also said the iPad Pro will be highly appealing to artists and other creatives, pointing towards the ease of use of the Apple Pencil and the iPad Pro’s sound system, two features he also highlighted in his earlier interview with The Independent.

According to Cook, sales of the new Apple TV were „very strong,“ a sentiment he echoed for the Apple Watch, which will „set a new record this quarter.“ Cook also said Apple doesn’t have plans to introduce sensors or other health features that would cause the FDA to get involved with the device. He didn’t rule out the possibility of other products that require FDA approval, like apps.

We don’t want to put the watch through the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) process. I wouldn’t mind putting something adjacent to the watch through it, but not the watch, because it would hold us back from innovating too much, the cycles are too long. But you can begin to envision other things that might be adjacent to it – maybe an app, maybe something else.“

Tim Cook’s interview, where he also speaks on the iPad mini 4 and device cannibalization, the health benefits of the Apple Watch, and the possibility of an Apple subscription service is well worth reading over at The Telegraph.

Apple’s iPad Pro will go on sale online on Wednesday, November 11. Pricing for the iPad Pro starts at $799 for the entry-level 32GB Wi-Fi only model. A 128GB Wi-Fi only model is available for $949, and a 128GB Wi-Fi + Cellular model is available for $1,079.

Apple to Start Selling iPad Pro on November 11

Apple’s much-anticipated larger-screened iPad Pro will go on sale both online and in Apple retail stores on Wednesday, November 11, reports 9to5Mac. Apple has thus far remained tight-lipped on the tablet’s release date, giving only a general November release timeline.

Previous rumors suggested the iPad Pro would go on sale in early November, perhaps during the first week of the month, but Apple’s release plans can shift ahead of an important launch. It is not clear if the company will offer pre-orders for the device ahead of the Wednesday, November 11 launch date.

Along with the iPad Pro, Apple also plans to begin selling its accessories, the Apple Pencil and the Apple Smart Keyboard, on November 11, both online and in retail stores.

Pricing on the iPad Pro starts at $799 for the 32GB Wi-Fi only version and goes up to $1,079 for a 128GB Wi-Fi + Cellular model. The Apple Pencil and the Smart Keyboard are sold separately for $99 and $169, respectively.

Buyer’s Guide: Discounts on iPad Mini 3, iPad Air 2, MacBook Air, and More

With Labor Day fast approaching, retailers are offering great discounts on a wide range of Apple products, from the iPad mini 3 and iPad Air 2 to the MacBook Air and Retina MacBook Pro.

If you’ve been waiting for a sale to pick up a laptop or a tablet, now is the time to buy. Many products are at the lowest prices we’ve seen, or close to it. We’ve also rounded up some deals on accessories and we’ve highlighted a list of popular apps and games that are on sale this week.

Just a reminder: Apple’s Back to School promotion is still going on both in stores and online, with Apple offering a free pair of Beats Solo2 headphones with the purchase of an eligible Mac. Eligible Macs include the iMac, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, MacBook, and Mac Pro.

iPad Air 2

Best Buy is discounting its entire iPad Air 2 lineup this week by up to $100, so now is a great time to purchase one of Apple’s larger iPads. The iPad Air 2 is not going to be upgraded next week, making it safe to purchase now.

The biggest discounts are on the higher-capacity models, with the 128GB Cellular iPad Air 2 discounted by $100, dropping the price to $729.99. That price is available on the Gold, Silver, and Space Gray models.

All of the WiFi models are discounted by $50 to $75, dropping the price on the entry-level 16GB model to $449.99 and the price on the 64GB model to $524.99. The 128GB WiFi iPad Air 2 is $100 off, available for $599.

Amazon also has several models of the iPad Air 2 available at low prices. The 16GB Cellular iPad Air 2 in Gold is available for $524.99. Last week, Apple launched its Back to School program. Instead of offering gift cards for the iTunes Store or Apple Store as it has done in years past, any Mac purchase through September 18 will net you a free pair of Beats headphones. If you’re buying a new Mac, that’s a deal worth checking out.

As it works on introducing some major changes to the third-party accessory sections of its retail stores, Apple has launched a new section in its online store dedicated to „Apple Tested Cases.“

The new page is displayed alongside third-party iPhone and iPad cases and outlines the testing procedures for Apple-approved Made for iPhone/iPad (MFi) third-party cases that Apple sells both online and in its retail stores. Designed to reassure customers about the quality of the third-party accessories available from Apple, the site goes over several testing parameters that cases must meet, including design, camera, acoustics, sensors, and cellular and wireless.

We analyze how a case fits, so you can still access every button, port, and jack. And a series of drop tests tells us the design is strong enough for day-to-day use.

Each case must fit the iPhone or iPad exactly, leaving all ports and features accessible. The camera and flash must be unobstructed, cases can’t interfere with FaceTime, phone calls, or audio sound, and sensors for ambient light and Touch ID must work the same with the case on and off. Cellular, Wi-Fi, and NFC connectivity are also tested, with each case needing to meet Apple’s standards for signal quality.

Apple has long engaged in these testing procedures to make sure accessories are compliant with its MFi programs, but the launch of the „Apple Tested Cases“ page marks the first time that Apple’s prominently shared its testing guidelines with the public.

The introduction of the page comes as Apple prepares to revamp the third-party accessory sections in many of its retail locations, cutting down on the number of accessories offered and packaging many of them in boxes that were co-designed by Apple to match the packaging of its own products.
