Configuring Linux and FreeBSD TCP performance

For both Linux and FreeBSD we’re using the sysctl utility. For all of the following options, entering the command ‘sysctl variable=number’ should do the trick. To view the current settings use: ‘sysctl <variable name>’

  • Maximum window size:
    • FreeBSD:
    • Linux:
  • Default window size:
    • FreeBSD, sending and receiving:
    • Linux, sending and receiving:
      net.core.wmem_default = 65536
      net.core.rmem_default = 65536
  • RFC 1323:
    This enables the useful window scaling options defined in rfc1323, which allows the windows to dynamically get larger than we specified above.
    • FreeBSD:
    • Linux:
  • Buffers:
    When sending large amounts of data, we can run the operating system out of buffers. This option should be enabled before attempting to use the above settings. To increase the amount of „mbufs“ available:
    • FreeBSD:
    • Linux:
      net.ipv4.tcp_mem= 98304 131072 196608

These quick changes will skyrocket TCP performance. Afterwards we were able to run ttcp and attain around 895 Mb/s every time – quite an impressive data rate. There are other options available for adjusting the UDP datagram sizes as well, but we’re mainly focusing on TCP here.

Defaults for FreeBSD 7.0-CURRENT are:

  • kern.ipc.maxsockbuf: 2097152
  • net.inet.tcp.sendspace: 131072
    net.inet.sctp.sendspace: 233016
  • net.inet.tcp.rfc1323: 1
  • kern.ipc.nmbclusters: 33792

Microsoft to Build Data Center in Siberia

Microsoft is elaborating a project to construct a data center for 10,000 servers in the Irkutsk region, Microsoft Rus CEO Birger Sten announced Friday, attributing the choice of location to stability of energy supplies there. According to Sten, a similar data-center in Ireland will cost $500 million to Microsoft.
Microsoft and the Irkutsk region’s authorities inked Friday a framework agreement for deliveries of licensed software to the region. After the signing, Microsoft Rus CEO Birger Sten and an aide to Irkutsk region’s governor, Andrei Gubov, unveiled to reporters the plans of software giant in respect of the region.

Top 15 Terminal Commands for Hidden Mac OS X Settings

There is a huge amount of hidden settings for Mac OS X and its applications that aren’t accessible from preferences dialog boxes or the System Preferences. Applications such as Tinkertool and Mac Pilot allow you to access some of these, but the real flexibility is from the Terminal. From here it is possible to edit any preferences file for any application on your Mac.
You’ll find the Terminal in the Utilities folder within the Applications folder. To carry out any of the following commands you will need to copy/paste or type in the line of text then hit enter. For the most part, applications will need restarting before changes take place. For most applications you can just quit and open them again, and for the Finder you can use the Force Quit dialog, just log out and log in again or type „killall Finder“ into the terminal after the command.
Feel free to add any of your favourites in the comments.
1. defaults write showhidden -bool YES
Makes hidden applications’ dock icons translucent. NO to reverse.

2. defaults write invertStoreLinks -bool YES
Normally the arrows next to artists and albums in your iTunes library search the iTunes store when you click them. This command changes them so that clicking will search your iTunes library instead. Put NO at the end to reverse.

3. defaults write devmode YES
This allows you to drag widgets out of Dashboard onto the desktop. Requires the dock to be relaunched to take effect, so type „killall Dock“ and press enter. Now, if you click and hold onto a widget in the dashboard and press F12 to return to the desktop, the widget won’t disappear with the rest. Put NO at the end to reverse.

4. defaults write PreferPlainText -bool TRUE
Forces all mail to be displayed as plain text. Replace TRUE with FALSE to reverse.
5. defaults write -g NSNavPanelExpandedStateForSaveMode -bool TRUE

Apple iPhone secretly monitors personal data

After all the restrictions that Steve Jobs has imposed on the owners of Apple iPhone, now it turns out that Apple is probably secretly collecting personal data from any iPhone.

The other hot news on behalf of the iPhone, announced by some major news sources, concerns the German unit of Vodafone Group, which has obtained a court order against Deutsche Telekom’s T-Mobile mobile carrier stating that the German telecommunications giant should start selling unlocked versions of the iPhone in Germany. Deutsche Telekom is selling the iPhone exclusively in Germany along with a mandatory 2-year contract and as such is accused of misuse sales practices. Specifically, Vodafone is questioning the iPhone’s exclusive use in T-Mobile’s network and the use of the device being limited to certain fees within T- Mobile’s subscription offerings. A T-Mobile spokesman has confirmed that the restraining order will be disputed by the respondent.

Vista mistakes Microsoft won’t repeat with Windows 7

Microsoft learned some hard lessons with Windows Vista that it already is applying to Windows 7.

  1. Keep Windows architectural changes to a minimum.
  2. Be more predictable (and believable) when it comes to delivery targets.

That’s according to Mike Nash, Corporate Vice President of Windows Product Management, who is chatting this week with press and bloggers about the state of Vista, just about a year after the company released the product to manufacturing.

Nash isn’t apologizing for Microsoft’s decision to introduce User Account Control prompts, default to standard-user mode (instead of administrator) or move the graphics subsystem out of the kernel space — all choices the company made in developing Vista. Nor does he think it was a mistake for Microsoft to delay the final RTM of Vista, resulting in the company missing last year’s lucrative holiday retail season.

Nash said Microsoft had to make the under-the-cover changes it did, for security and performance reasons, to Windows Vista.

“I don’t regret that we made a lot of changes to Vista,” Nash said in an interview on November 14. “But I don’t anticipate that level of architectural change in Windows 7.”

Microsoft hasn’t said explicitly what it plans to do to minimize disruptions from any internal changes it does make with Windows 7. But it has dropped some hints.

If the company does build Windows 7 on top of MinWin — the stripped-down Windows core — as it sounds as if it is planning to do, that will help reduce some problems Microsoft and its partners have encountered, in terms of Windows dependencies. There’s been talk Microsoft plans to include a hypervisor as part of Windows 7, enabling users to run applications virtually to prevent incompatibilities. And there’s always the mysterious “StrongBox” feature that allegedly is part of Windows 7. Perhaps StrongBox provides some kind of isolation from lower-level Windows changes?

In terms of delivery schedules, Microsoft has made a conscious move from being transparent to “translucent” with its future Windows release plans — including its plans for service packs. It also has appointed as head of Windows engineering a guy who knows how to make the trains run on time.
